Dr. Heffington is an Associate Professor Emeritus from the Mechanical Engineering department at Texas A&M University. During his 32-year tenure there, he was the founding director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at Texas A&M University, Coordinator of Continuous Improvement and Accreditation, and Assistant Head of the Mechanical Engineering department.

His broad knowledge and research base includes energy management and design; studies of energy monitoring to conserve energy, manage demand, and increase productivity in industrial facilities; resource assessments of US crude oil and alternative energy sources; the utilization and combustion properties of low-Btu gases; and the energy audit process and demand control in industry.

Dr. Heffington personally has directed about 200 industrial assessments and has supervised the review of over 300 energy audit reports for commercial and institutional buildings. He has been a key instructor for the AEE's Comprehensive Five-Day Training Program for Energy Managers since 2003, at which he teaches the fundamentals of energy management to about 150 manufacturing and business professionals each year. This program leads to gaining the AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) designation. He is the author or co-author of more than 80 publications and reports, and has given and participated in over 50 presentations and panel sessions. Among his many distinctions, the US Department of Energy honored him with a Distinguished Service Award for his work with the IAC.
